How often should I get a dental cleaning?

We often hear things like “why do you go to the dentist so often?”, “I go once a year and that’s enough” or “I’ve never had a cleaning because I don’t need one.” Yet many tooth and gum diseases progress without causing discomfort at first.

What does a professional cleaning do?

Even if you brush and floss every day, some areas are hard to reach. Over time, plaque hardens into tartar, which cannot be removed at home. During a professional cleaning we remove tartar and surface stains, and with clean teeth we can examine your teeth and gums in detail.

Prevention is simpler than treatment

Together with the cleaning, a clinical exam and, when indicated, X-rays help detect cavities, fractures, gingivitis or periodontitis early. Treating a problem at an early stage is usually simpler and more comfortable than treating it once it has progressed.

How often?

For many people a cleaning roughly every six months is recommended, but the ideal frequency is individual. Some patients need more frequent visits, for example every three or four months, because they build up tartar more easily, have gum disease, wear braces or implants, or have health conditions that call for it. Your dentist will set the right interval with you.

What you do at home matters too

  • Brush at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.
  • Floss or use interdental brushes daily.
  • Limit sugar and acidic drinks.
  • Get in touch if you notice bleeding gums, persistent bad breath or sensitivity.
