Teeth whitening: myths, facts and aftercare

Teeth whitening is one of the most requested cosmetic treatments, and also one of the most misunderstood. Does it damage enamel? Does it work the same for everyone? How long does it last? Here we clear up the most common myths so you can make an informed decision.

Myth 1: “Whitening damages enamel”

When it is done under professional supervision, with appropriate products and concentrations, whitening is considered a safe procedure. Temporary sensitivity during or after treatment can occur, which is why a dentist should evaluate your teeth first and adapt the protocol to your case.

Myth 2: “Everyone’s teeth end up equally white”

Each person starts from a different shade and responds differently. Stains from coffee, tea, wine or tobacco tend to respond better than stains of internal origin. Crowns, veneers and composite fillings do not change color with whitening, something worth planning for if you have restorations on visible teeth.

Myth 3: “Home remedies do the same job”

Some popular remedies, such as baking soda or lemon, can wear down or irritate teeth when used without control. Over-the-counter options usually have low concentrations and are not tailored to your mouth. Check with your dentist before trying any product.

Before whitening: the evaluation

A good result starts with a check-up: ruling out cavities, gum problems or existing sensitivity, and having a professional cleaning if needed. With that information, your dentist can tell you whether whitening is right for you and which method fits best: in-office, at home with custom trays, or a combination.

Aftercare

  • For the first few days, cut back on coffee, tea, red wine and strongly colored foods.
  • Avoid smoking: besides staining, it affects your overall oral health.
  • Keep up your daily hygiene and regular professional cleanings.
  • If you notice sensitivity, tell your dentist; there are products that can help.

How long the result lasts depends on your habits and your teeth. Your dentist will let you know if a touch-up makes sense at some point.
